Inclusivity

The Department of Biological Chemistry is committed to providing a supportive environment in which all are welcome and the dimensions added by diversity of race, ethnicity, nationality and/or immigration status, culture, socioeconomic status, veteran status, ability, religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, and marital status are valued and celebrated. We are dedicated to doing our part to eradicate prejudice and insensitivity, to removing barriers to equal access, and to promoting inclusion within our department, the larger Hopkins community, and academia. The BC department provides support at many levels to our trainees, faculty, staff and university service providers to ensure that they are respected, included, empowered, and engaged.

OUR COMMITTEE

The BC department recognizes that inclusivity and diverse perspectives enhance the academic and creative scientific environment for all trainees, faculty, staff and university service providers. To support these values our department has established a committee, that includes students, postdocs, staff, and all faculty, to listen, learn, plan, organize, prioritize, and oversee all activities that relate to DEI within our department. We hold an annual ‘Culturing Inclusivity’ Workshop and are dedicated to consistent support and oversight, regardless of changes in membership or leadership within the department.

Inclusion is in our DNA

Inclusion is in our DNA | Johns Hopkins Founding Letter

Nearly a century and a half ago, our founder, Mr. Johns Hopkins, wrote a letter in which he established his vision for and values of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Those values – respect, dignity, integrity, inclusion, excellence, and diversity – have withstood the test of time and still ring true today. They continue to provide us with inspiration and direction.

We are Johns Hopkins Medicine. We must continue to remain committed to our founding values and stand together to support each other.
