| Signals/genes that trigger stem cell/adipose lineage commitment and differentiation; Hypothalamic control of adiposity/obesity |
| Our research goals are to determine the mechanisms:
1. by which mesenchymal stem cells commit to the adipocyte lineage and differentiate into adipocytes. We utilize mouse pluripotent stem and preadipocyte cell lines as models that faithfully mimic commitment and differentiation in vivo. We focus on the signaling and gene transcription cascades that trigger these processes, and
2. by which whole body energy status is monitored by the hypothalamus and how this information is transmitted to higher brain centers to suppress food intake. We discovered that the hypothalamic malonyl-CoA, a biochemical indicator of energy surplus, reciprocally alters orexigenic and anorexigenic neuropeptide expression and thereby, appetite.
