Recreational Activities

Baltimore is a devoted sports town. The Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens play major league baseball and football respectively in new stadiums near the Inner Harbor. Some of the best college lacrosse can be seen at the Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland. The Medical School has the Cooley Athletic Center, which is free to graduate students. This athletic complex includes a full size gymnasium for basketball and volleyball, an indoor track, squash courts, racquetball courts, a weight room, saunas, and three outdoor lighted tennis courts. Sea kayaking is available at Fells point, a few blocks from the medical center.

Baltimore's mild weather makes outdoor recreation possible for much of the year. Eastern Maryland's Atlantic Coast offers many miles of beautiful beaches, while further inland, wildlife sanctuaries serve as stopping points for migrating birds during the spring and autumn. Western Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania offer excellent hiking and picnicking among the rolling hills and farming country, there are many county, state, and national parks in the area.

Housing and Parking

Graduate students have a wide choice of affordable housing. In contrast to most coastal cities, Baltimore rental prices are modest. Most BCMB students live near the Homewood campus, and ride the free shuttle bus to the Medical School campus. Graduate and medical student housing is also available at the Medical School in the University-owned Reed Hall, an excellent choice for international students entering the US for the program.

Support

All BCMB students receive full tuition, health and dental insurance, and stipend support for the duration of their studies.

The stipend for current students as of July 1, 2009 (and for incoming first year students as of August 24, 2009) is $27,125. Each year the stipend is adjusted to reflect cost-of-living increase.
