Analysis of the
low level HIV-1 viremia that persists in patients on highly
active antiretroviral has shown that in some patients most
of the plasma virus consists of a single dominant clone. The
figure shows a phylogenetic tree of sequences from one such
patient. The colored triangles in the large box represent independent
isolates with identical sequence obtained at different time
points. The cellular source of this predominant plasma clone
is an as yet unidentified cell type capable of proliferative
expansion following infection. Based on work done by BCMB student
Tim Brennan in Robert Siliciano’s lab, art work by Catherine
Delphia.
